A natural look for a day at the office

This 12-step guide for a natural day makeup creates a soft, fresh makeup design perfect for a teenager or for a day in the office. These basic elements of makeup application are the foundation to creating any makeup look.

Step 1

Foundation – After applying the organic pre-makeup base hydrating primer, apply dots of foundation using fingertips on the nose, forehead, cheekbones and the chin. Start at the centre of the nose, smooth the foundation across the cheekbones, glide it across the forehead, and smooth it down across the chin and jawline. Use a sponge or complexion brush to blend around the hairline, either side of the nose and down the jawline. Work from the top of the forehead, working down in the direction of facial hair, blending right down into the neckline. The secret to a good base is to blend well.

Step 2

Concealer – Using a sponge or fingertips, apply the perfect glow concealer to cover any pigmentation, broken capillaries or acne, using minimal amounts of this product with a small stippling action (small finger touches).
Conceal under the eye area, and on the eyelids, with small touches (by using your ring finger). Remember to blend well.

Step 3

Powder – Using a large powder brush, apply the powder to the entire face, brushing downwards, over the eyelids and lips, especially where you have concealed. This will act to absorb any excess moisture and help provide more longevity to the makeup.

Step 4

Brows – Add colour if needed by applying the same eye shadow colour as the existing brow, use a beveled or brow brush (no lighter or darker shades). You can also use a pencil if you prefer by applying with light feathery strokes.

Step 5

Eye Design – Blend, blend, blend! Apply an eye-fixing base (to make it last longer), then a nude eye shadow over the whole lid, to ensure you have a good base to work on. This creates a base which is soft, easy to blend on and prevents the colour from fading. For a simple day look select a soft colour like Taupe with a subtle shimmer to highlight the eye. To increase the definition of the eye, apply a darker shade on the contour of the eye (in the crease of the eye) and blend.

Step 6

Eyeliner – Using an eye pencil or shadow with a thin eyeliner brush, draw only three-quarters of the way over, starting from the outside and moving in. Then using your eye line brush or applicator tip (with eye shadow on it), apply again from the outside inward, starting thick then moving thinly (any errors can be removed with a cotton tip). Bow, on the centre of the chin. The result is a soft, natural accentuation of your gorgeous features, which is timeless, subtle and sophisticated.

Step 7

Mascara – Using mascara wand, brush the lashes up and outward to separate. Apply a good amount on the top set of the lashes. For a softer effect choose a chocolate brown colour instead of black.

Step 8

Lip Liner – Start by selecting your lipstick or gloss. Your lip pencil should be closely matched to this. Apply pencil on the bow of the upper lip and then the centre of the lower lip. Once you have got these sections correct, join the outer edges to them. You can blend the lip liner across the entire lip to increase the longevity of the lip colour.

Step 9

Lipstick or Lip Gloss – Using your SLA Paris lip brush, take a small amount of product, working the lipstick or gloss into the brush first, so when you apply it, it will go on smoothly. Apply the lipstick or gloss where you have lined first and then fill in the gaps.

Step 10

Cheeks – Flick brush downward on a towel to remove excess product before applying. Apply the blush by starting on the apples of the cheeks blending it backwards on an angle towards the tip of the ear.

Step 11

Highlighting and shading – Apply highlights or shading to any areas requiring contouring using a powder contouring palette (see the Autumn edition of Sydney Hills Living).

Step 12

Colour balance – Check that your eye design matches the lips and blends well with the overall look. Ensure the blusher colour harmonises with colours used on the eyes.
Even application – Are the eyes even? Is there too much foundation in one area and not another? Is everything well blended so there are no visible lines? ❐
